MentoringMorphosis: Find Your own Way in Academia
Mentoring is a proven, successful concept for the effective exchange of experiences which helps the mentees to gain new insights and perspectives and thereby provides a higher level of professional confidence.
The mentors also learn about the specific situation of young scientists because they do not play their typical role of supervisor and boss but act as experienced advisors to answer their mentees’ career questions. On both sides, the mentoring process will lead to changes in those involved.
The group mentoring programme SciMento-hessenweit supports PhD students and postdocs in the natural, engineering and life sciences from all the universities in Hesse and their cooperative institutions with the aim of preparing them for a scientific career path. Interested women can apply year around for admission into the two-year programme. The cut-off date for starting in any given year is the 15th of April of that year.
The pilot phase of the programme, based in Frankfurt (2005 to 2007), as well as the establishment of the programme in the whole county of Hesse (2008 to 2010) was financed by the Hessian Ministry for Science and the Arts. As of November 2010, Scimento-hessenweit is financed by the five Hessian universities: Frankfurt, Kassel, Marburg, Giessen and Darmstadt, which gives them the opportunity to offer their young female scientists a successful proven instrument for human resource development.
